Momotaro Denim | 9 Months In & Retired

The are now at approximately 9 months of wear with two cold soaks.  After the second soak, I rode around on my bike while they were wet to dry them and allow them to form to my body.  I have yet to take post soak measurements, but I intend to.  I had our denim repair specialists repair the following: usual crotch reinforcement, knee, small hole in back wallet pocket.  You can see my motorcycle key breaking through in the coin pocket.  I have officially retired these to the Context wall and have been wearing my Momotaro + Context Grand Indigo Selvage 0701MCXX exclusively for just over a month now.  I am continually impressed with the quality of the fade that occurs in Momotaro fabric.  I’ll have to compile a list of substances I’ve spilled on my 0701′s.  You’ll have to stick to the list if you want to achieve the same fade qualities.  Here is a short list: beer, whiskey, sawdust, coffee, blood, and greenland wax.

Well done man! These must be the sickest pair of jeans I’ve ever seen! A true inspiration

They look pretty rad. You have got to be one of the roughest people on denim I have ever seen. But it sure produces the best fades. Hats off to the rad stuff you guys do at Context. Keep up the good work. Thanks -

Thanks to Jake Naughton for photographing my jeans. Shoot him an email, he does denim portraits at our shop from time to time. Cool stuff:

While your denim’s fade is pretty sick as-it-is, how much post-editing was done to this photo? The contrast and colors looks boosted. I’m not trying to belittle your pair of jeans, but it’s very easy to make denim look a whole lot better with even a little bit of manipulation in photoshop.
They still look great, don’t get me wrong.

Yea, you cant retire those yet. They just starting to break loose! Show us what Momo’s are really made of!

    Hey Robert,

Thanks for asking about the post-processing. I shot the jeans in studio with a couple of softboxes which flattened them out a bit and washed the contrast fading out just a bit. So, I boosted the levels and resaturated. I tried to keep them as close to how they look on the body as possible. I can say they look just as remarkable in person, and a flat image of jeans lying flat on the screen wouldn’t have done that sweet whiskering or honeycombing justice without adjusting the contrast for lying flat on the ground.

    Hey Jake,

Thanks for the explanation. You bring up a good point: how else could we tell how well-worn they are without any manipulation? Good stuff.
Also, I like your site. The content is even better, but the site itself works very well. You could be APC’s unofficial representative on raw denim.

Ryan, these look really incredible. I think I’ll have to, most definitely, add some Momotaros to my wishlist.

These look spectacular. Now that you have retired these what’s next? I will not deny that I would love to see some photos of the grand indigo collaboration you guys recently did with Momotaro.

Fantastic job, Ryan. Beautiful fades. Blue hands ;-) Sad to see those are being retired already, but I completely understand your excitement about getting some days in on those new MomoxContext pair.
