Jon Gaffney’s EDC

One of, if not the best thing about raw denim is the opportunity to wear them in to you. They’ll take on your specific dimensions, fade in whisker patterns where they crease every time you sit, and honey comb on the back of the knees if you wear them long enough. What will make your fading most unique however is not just sitting and moving about your daily life, its your EDC. EDC is your Every Day Carry, those things that have got to be in your pockets every day. After 2.5 months some of my EDC is starting to leave its mark in the form of an indigo negative. So, I figured I’d share what exactly I’m stuffing into the pockets of the Dope + Drakkars every day. I like to travel light, and these aren’t Mr. Williams 8 pocket cargo pants, but if I do forget one of my EDC, I notice and it bothers me all day.

Billykirk No.92 Card Case: My card case from the Brothers Bray is leaving the most distinctive wear by far. The entire outline of the case is starting to emerge, with the two snaps most prevalent. Right front pocket.

Benchmade Mini-Barrage Pocket Knife: Leaving the second most wear so far, probably because I am sitting on it a lot. It is the most utilitarian thing I carry. Try carrying a pocket knife for a week and then going without it…you can’t. Plus the assisted opening on the Mini-Barrage is bad ass. Right rear pocket, right hand side.

Chapstick: Always the regular black one, or the blue moisturizer. Leaving the third most wear. Left front pocket.

Pocket Notebook: I’m an office supply whore with an overactive mind. I need something to write on with me at all times and I hate bad paper. Field Notes or Moleskine. Right rear pocket behind the Benchmade.

Keys: These are an alternate. They’re only in my jeans if there isn’t somewhere more comfortable (bag, jacket pocket) to put them or I need quick access to them. Back pockets, usually right side.

Cell Phone: Same as my keys, its an alternate. Plus, I recently picked up a smartphone that I feel wrong sitting on because of its price tag, and its uncomfortable. Right rear pocket. Charlie Card: When I’m headed into the city. Left rear pocket.

Looks like things are coming along nicely…do you ever keep anything in the 5th pocket?

You’re an office supply whore and carry field notes but you don’t have a pen? I’d recommend adding a small flashlight to your keychain, if anything, just to cover more bases.

    Ranard,

I never use the 5th pocket, honestly I could do without it on any of my jeans. To me its only function is the aesthetics of a traditional 5 pocket jean. Also, I find anything but my wallet can make the pocket bulky.

    branespload,

Haha I considered adding in my preferred pen, but the fact is I rarely carry one in my jeans. I find it uncomfortable, and I’m always worried it will explode or leak. Also, finding a writing implement is usually easy, but amassing scraps of paper with ideas and other notes written on them becomes chaotic, so the notebook solves that problem. My pens are usually carried in my briefcase or breast pocket of my shirt, sometimes clipped to my ear (they won’t stay behind the ears, very annoying). I have two pens I swear by, the Lamy Safari fountain pen and Sharpie Pens. Both write very well. I also write with a pencil a lot.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Yea that fifth pocket is a tricky one…I usually put my chapstick and nail clippers in there…Don’t ask me why I keep nail clippers with me lol

    Jon,

How do you like the Billykirk card case? I’ve been considering picking one up but I’m not sure about switching to front-pocket wear. Is it a comfortable fit?

    Crosby,

I’m a big fan of the Billykirk card case. I’ve had it for about a year now and couldn’t be happier with it. Good leather, good stitching, and its wearing in nicely. The switch to the front pocket wallet is one I highly recommend, its much more light weight and comfortable. I have roughly 6 cards in mine, and cash I just fold and put in my pocket.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Awesomely simplistic. Nice choice on the eris, and props for carrying a BM Barrage. I love denim+BM’s..

Thanks Wes! BM+Denim is indeed a killer combo. Really happy with the Eris so far, cool and functional as hell.

Regarding the 5th pocket, I find a small pocket knife like the CRKT Ichi, pocket clip removed, fits dandy. I’ve even carried a small sod buster in it.
